Chopta is a small region of meadows and evergreen forest area which is a part of kedarnath wildlife sanctuary located in Uttarakhand state, India and a base for trekking to Tungnath, third temple of Panch Kedar, which lies 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) away. Located at a distance of 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) from Tungnath is Chandrashila, a rising to over 4,000 metres (13,000 ft).


Chopta is an unspoiled natural destination lying in the lap of the Uttarakhand Himalayas and offers views of the imposing Himalayan range including Trishul, Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba. It is located at an elevation of 2,680 metres (8,790 ft) above sea level. Chopta village is surrounded by forests of pine, deodar and rhododendron and is rich in flora and fauna include rare species of birds and musk deer.

D eoriya Tal is situated on the Chopta – Ukhimath road about 3 kms, from roadside at Sari Village and is at an altitude of 2438 mts. This lake has captivating surroundings with forests all around. The Chopta Chandrashila Trek takes us to one of the most breathtakingly beautiful part of the Garhwal Himalayas. start from Haridwar, and pass through Deoriatal, Chopta and Tungnath to reach the summit of Chandrashila for a great view of the Indian Himalayas. Maximum altitude reached on the ChoptaTungnath trek would be around 4000m at the summit of Chandrashila.

This region is a protected sanctuary for musk deer, and is rich in flora and fauna. Tungnath is famous for being the highest temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. On top of Chandrashila we will be able to see Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, Nandadevi and Trishulpeaks.

Devariya Tal History

It is believed that the recognition of this lake is from Mahabharata era. Although there are several mythological story can be heard from local peoples that they have heard from their forefather.

Story 1 : It is believed that Hindu Gods used to bath in this lake. Therefore the name of lake is Devariya (Dev or देव is Hindi language word which means God in English).

Story 2 : It is also believed that lord Krishna origin this lake with help ofVasuki Naag (several headed cobra) toquench the thirst of Pandavas . The origin of this lake was being to located in Devar village, which is near from this place. But the God-Goddess of Devar village did not want to locate Devariya lake in village. Then lord Krishna originated lake with the help of Vasuki Naag on uphill of Sari village. Since the story is also related to Devar village hence the name.

Story 2 is considered one of the most prominent history of Devariya Tal. Here is why every year a great fair is organized by villagers on occasion of Krishna Janmashtami festival.
